Smoking tobacco has been in existence for thousands of years. For most of its existence smoking has been acceptable, tolerable, and permitted in our mainstream society. In recent years, smoking tobacco has been under scrutiny. Smoking bans have been introduced to restrict smokers from smoking in public and private places. For example, restaurants, bars, hotels, parks, and beaches throughout the United States have established the bans against public smoking. I discovered this has significance as it affects society because smoking has been a staple for thousands of years and is now being questioned whether or not smoking should be permissible. For example, United Health Care’s rate without tobacco is $148 per month; with to bacco it is $177 per month (East Coast Health Insurance). This website sells health insurance and published this information to explain how smokers’ rates will be greater than non-smoker’s rates. Smoker’s spending is dramatically increasing all together. However, the money is not only coming from the people who smoke. I decided to explore more on this topic because I wanted a more reliable source that provided an increased amount information for me. The article â€Å"The Case Against Smoking† by Thomas Lambert provided a different perspective on health care and spending’s of a smoker. â€Å"A portion of such costs is borne not by smokers themselves but by the public at large† (Lambert).
